This piece was carved during the Covid lockdown when extended families were divided. I finished the sculpture the month before the end of lock down, when children and their grandparents could finally be reunited.

In the original stone I could see an elderly person with a baby. Their heads were nestling together; a touching bridge between two generations. This sculpture shows the contrast of these seasons of life and the extremes of the human life cycle. This is the life story of every human; the certainties that we all begin life at birth, age, and then finally depart.

The sculpture bears a remarkable likeness to my late mother and my son when he was born.
